The data presented are:
Data were compiled by PHIDU from deaths data based on the 2009 to 2013 Cause of Death Unit Record Files supplied by the Australian Coordinating Registry and the Victorian Department of Justice, on behalf of the Registries of Births, Deaths and Marriages and the National Coronial Information System, as published on the PHIDU website by Population Health Area (PHA). The PHA data were allocated to Commonwealth Electoral Divisions. The population used in calculation of age-standardised rates is the ABS Estimated Resident Population (ERP), 30 June 2009 to 30 June 2013; the population standard is the ABS ERP for Australia, 30 June 2009 to 30 June 2013.
The atlas opens with a map of 'Male deaths, 0 to 74 years (Standardised ratio)' for Australia. Use the 'Select data' button to change the mortality indicator you want to view in the map and column chart. As you change this, the Standardised ratios/rates for the State/Territories in the table in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen also change. Click on one of these and it shows in the column graph, to aid you to see which areas are above, or below, the average.
If you select an area in the data table, the area is highlighted on the map and in the column chart.
You can zoom to a State/Territory by selecting your jurisdiction of interest under the ‘Filter to an area’ button. Note that this limits the areas in the column graph to those within your selected jurisdiction. Manual zooming is also possible - see the Help file.
The areas can be sorted by standardised ratio/rate or number - just click on ‘Standardised ratio’, 'Standardised rate', 'Number' (or ‘Name’, to restore the list).
The data on which the maps are based can be downloaded from the link below, or by using the ‘Link to data’ button below the legend box.The Help file explains how to remove filters, selections, etc., as well as other features.
